As the academic semester finishes winding down and people begin to relax during the holidays, there is finally enough time to reflect on the season Kennesaw State’s Club Speedball team has had so far and the expectations for next semester.
As a team unit, first of all, few can match the growth and progression that was shown by this team from Kennesaw. When we pause to think back to this time last year, the team was almost non existent; only 7 members. Keeping this in mind, it is unbelievable how much this team has accomplished in such a short time. Completely different from the team that was killed by the Jackets during a double-header a year ago, KSU’s Club Speedball team has turned in to a competitive program that has done more than keep pace with their Georgia Tech counterparts; having numbers in the mid 20’s showing up consistently and ready to work.
The amount of people that were able to come out to each practice was a huge reason to the team’s success. As the season wore on, it was apparent that the players had developed chemistry with each other and were comfortable out on the pitch next to one another, knowing each other as Speedball players.
The most Improved member of the Club Speedball team this past semester, however, was one of the new guys, Stephen Poole. From someone who looked uncomfortable in his own stride and felt uncomfortable in his movement or skill, to a reliable squad member capable of sneaking behind opposing deflectors and dividing their defenses, Poole not only showed the most improvement on KSU’s team but he embodied the growth that the group had experienced as a whole.
So with winter break looming for Kennesaw State’s Club Speedball team, they plan to rest up, enjoy the holidays with their families, and do daily exercises to help slow athlete’s atrophy. Once next semester rolls around the corner, focused efforts will be used on finding a few more people to fill the roster and begin building the freshman class presence on the team. A more organized work out regimen and practice schedule will be used as well as getting more presentations in front of classes at KSU to promote Club Speedball.
As for reflection on what’s already taken place, the team seems to take its undefeated record in stride and exudes a hunger to extend this record. Will they produce another excellent semester of action and highlights and, most importantly, victories? Or will Georgia Tech and newcomer university be the first to beat the unbeaten Owls?
